4.1 Major Compressor Components
- Air Intake System– filters dust, provides clean air to compressor
- Compression Element– core component (piston, screw rotors, impeller)
- Drive System– electric motor or engine, coupled directly or via belt
- Cooling System– removes heat from compressed air and compressor body
- Lubrication System– reduces friction, seals gaps, prevents wear
4.2 Air/Oil Separation & Filtration
- In oil-injected compressors: oil mixed during compression
- Separator elementremoves oil mist from discharge air
- Oil filterensures clean oil circulation
- Importance of regular separator maintenance for performance and air purity
4.3 Cooling Arrangements
- Air-cooled: uses ambient air; simple and cost-effective
- Water-cooled: used in large compressors or hot environments
- Trainer cue: emphasize cooling efficiency and condensate removal
4.4 Control & Safety Devices
- Pressure relief valve– safety protection against overpressure
- Temperature sensors– monitor overheating
- Check valves & drain valves– prevent backflow and remove condensate
- Controller panel– displays operating data and alarms
4.5 Air Receiver (Storage Tank)
- Stores compressed air and stabilizes pressure fluctuations
- Acts as a buffer between compressor and demand
- Allows cooling and moisture separation
- Rule of thumb: 10–12 liters per CFM for stable operation
4.6 Ancillary Equipment
- Aftercooler– removes heat and moisture from discharge air
- Moisture separator– removes condensed water
- Filters– remove particles and oil aerosols
- Dryers– remove remaining moisture for desired dew point
4.7 Instrumentation & Monitoring
- Gauges: pressure, temperature, differential pressure across filters
- Flow meter and dew point monitor for performance tracking
